VOCALOID
WHAT IS VOCALOID?

VOCALOID is a voice-synthesis software aimed at producing authentic-sounding singing voices by simply typing in the lyrics with the appropriate tuning.

The name VOCALOID is a portmanteau of the word Vocal Android, which compresses to one word; VOCALOID. This pertains to the voices, of whom are referred to as singing machines that are created in the likeness of a human. Crypton, one of Yamaha's licensees for the VOCALOID software would later take up this concept for their Character Vocal Series, emphasizing on the android aspect of the VOCALOID to become a futuristic idol singer.

VOCALOID operates by using Vocal Libraries comprising of specially-recorded voices from actual singers to produce lifelike singing voices. It also uses standard musical effects such as Vibrato and pitch bends to help users get the effects they desire from the synthesized vocals. VOCALOID can synthesize in English and Japanese; there are English-only and Japanese-only Vocal Libraries, but there are bilingual Vocaloids as well.

VOCALOID achieves lifelike singing voice synthesis by using Frequency-Domain Singing Articulation Splicing and Shaping, a vocal (singing-voice) synthesizing system developed by Yamaha. This technique makes use of a singer's voice vocalizing word syllables commonly used both in speech and singing, in given octaves. The VOCALOID software handles the pitch tuning, syllable transition and the connection of all the syllables, including the desired effects of the user, to create the words in the song, which is then sung to a lifelike singing voice.

Currently, VOCALOID2 is the latest version of the VOCALOID software, which simplifies operation, and is more user-friendly than its predecessor.

HOW TO SYNTHESIZE SINGING IN VOCALOID?

VOCALOID is built like a music sequencing software, so entering musical notes and lyrics is easy. A user simply enters the melody in the piano roll and the lyrics are entered along with it. Double-clicking the bars opens the properties of the note, and its specifications, including vibrato, stress and length can be changed as desired. The kind of lyrics that can be entered in the note depends on the Vocal Library in use.

VOCALOID contains more settings and options for the notes, allowing a user to create authentic human-like singing voices, to the point that perhaps, no one can tell the difference. The only thing it cannot do right now is to include accompaniment or music, but its ReWire capability allows the software to attach itself to another ReWire-aware music software.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS IN USING VOCALOID?

Once installed, VOCALOID is available to you 24/7. Once a creative idea for a song comes to you, you can quickly realize it with VOCALOID, melody, lyrics and all. As you expand your vocal libraries, you increase your roster of "singers" that are available to you all the time, to sing any song you desire.

With enough mastery, the capabilities of VOCALOID is limited merely by the user's imagination.

WHAT IS THE INVOLVEMENT OF POLYGLOID FOR VOCALOID?

While VOCALOID has reached cult status in Japan, it has barely made a scratch elsewhere. Fandom is high in the US and in other western countries, but song production is very low to NONE at all. Mostly only otakus who take the extra mile in learning the Japanese language, and professional musicians would get a working idea of how VOCALOID works.

Based on personal observations, the lack of VOCALOID content (most especially original content) from the English-speaking and foreign community (and with modest to little VOCALOID content elsewhere) is due to the lack of English documentation for VOCALOID, since the most popular VOCALOID, HATSUNE MIKU, is only in Japanese. Moreover, the system was not very well explained, and existing tutorials failed to take the Japanese VOCALOIDs, whom are more popular, into account.

Because of this, the POLYGLOID project was started. It aims not only to prove multilinguality to all VOCALOIDs regardless of language design, but to raise awareness to the English community about song production using VOCALOID. The best way to get production to work is to show how it works, and to serve as a learning resource for would-be producers.
This is the awareness project, VOICE EXPANSION SERIES, spearheaded by SOTONE RIZA.
